Questions to Ask Your Alarm Installer
If you are thinking of investing in an electronic alarm and/or monitoring system, here are some questions to ask suppliers to ensure you get the best possible product and service:
- What is the difference in performance and cost for wireless or cabled security systems?
- What are the components of the system - detection, signalling and control devices?
- Will the products or system need to be tested and maintained regularly? How does this occur?
- Are your staff qualified/licensed/registered to install and maintain products and systems?
- Do products and services meet Australian Standards for quality and installation?
- Can you provide an obligation-free assessment of my security needs?
- Does the product or service come with 24/7 access to a technician?
- How simple is the system to operate - What will I have to do?
- Will the quote include all costs - set up, equipment, monitoring fees, warranties, call out fees?
- Can you supply a list of existing customers to contact and ask about the service they receive?
- How will the security system be powered? Does it back up source of power?
- Does the security system have a key chain remote control?
- Will the monitoring systems have another means of communication, other than the phone line?
- Will the monitoring service include the types of responses you need - police, security, medical, technical, authorised persons?
- What is the escalation process should the monitoring service be alerted? Who is called, and in what order?
- How does the system prevent or handle false alarms? Are there any associated charges?
- Does the system need or have access control? What options are available? Does the keypad have panic buttons to fire, ambulance and police?
- Can the system incorporate fire detection, alarm and response as well as intruder detection?
- How quickly does the system detect and respond?
- What if I have pets inside - will they set the security system off?
